Stargard Castle

The building began through the order of the Margraves Johann I and Otto III von Brandenburg in 1236 and was finished in 1258.

The castle became the residence of Duke Johanns I von Mecklenburg-Stargard after the second Mecklenburg distribution of the estate. The castle remained under ducal ownership after the Stargard line died out but was, with some exceptions, hardly used. It is the only remaining and largest castle built on a hill in North Germany and the oldest building in Mecklenburg-West Pomerania. The 38 m high tower, reconstructed from 1991 to 1994 and can be entered, is an attraction. The deepest tower dungeon in North Germany is also in the tower.

The castle was used as a recreation home and as a school for the pioneer leaders for the FDJ (organisation for teenagers) after 1945.

The castle ground was extensively renovated after 1999. A hotel and inn were opened in 1999. You can also visit the castle museum, run by the Diakonischen Werkstätten (a church-run charity) in Neubrandenburg.

There are many cultural events at the castle. You can also get married at the castle.

The castle nestles in a two-hectare landscape park which has had its current design since the end of the 18th century. There is also an herb garden which is worth a visit.
