Mirow Castle

Situated on an island in Lake Mirow, the palace and surrounding buildings were built in stages between 1749 and 1770 on the site of a former commandery of the Order of St. John which was founded in  1227.

The palace itself is a two-to-three-storey stucco building with some Rococo-style moulding. By the 19th century, it was already being used as a school, and during World War II it housed an old people's home. Between 1949 and 1952, the complex was restored and some of the interior rooms of the palace recreated in simplified form.

Extensive renovation took place at the beginning of the 21st century, and in the summer of 2014 the palace opened to the public. Inside, the rooms have been elaborately restored and redecorated, though most are still unfurnished. The ballroom on the first floor is very well preserved - a Late Italian Baroque masterpiece.

Like Schloss Bothmer, Mirow has a direct link to the British royal family in that it was the birthplace, in 1744, of Princess Sophie Charlotte, later wife of King George III and Queen of Great Britain and Ireland.

After the island was taken over by the Dukes of Mecklenburg, what had been the church of the Knights of St. John became the church used by the ducal court. From the 19th century onwards, it also served as a burial place for the Dukes of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. The church burned down in 1945, and was rebuilt five years later. The tower, however, was not restored and re-erected until 1993.

The Liebesinsel (island of love) directly adjacent to the island on which the palace stands is a deeply romantic spot which houses the grave of the last Grand Duke, Adolf Friedrich IV, who committed suicide in 1918.
